Second Quarter: Second to the Last

 

The second quarter of 10th grade has been a period of significant personal and academic growth. As I reflect on the various subjects and experiences during this time, one of the key realizations is the importance of time management and organization. With a more demanding curriculum, I found myself juggling multiple assignments, projects, and exams. This quarter taught me to prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and develop effective study habits. The ability to manage time efficiently not only improved my academic performance but also provided a valuable life skill that will undoubtedly serve me well in future endeavors.

Furthermore, the second quarter allowed me to explore diverse subjects, expanding my intellectual horizons. Whether it was delving into complex mathematical concepts, analyzing literature, or experimenting in science labs, each subject provided unique challenges and insights. This diverse range of learning experiences helped me discover my strengths and areas for improvement. Additionally, exposure to different disciplines fostered a holistic understanding of the world, emphasizing the interconnectedness of knowledge. This broadened perspective not only enhances my academic proficiency but also instills a curiosity that extends beyond the classroom.

In addition to academic growth, the second quarter also provided opportunities for personal development and self-discovery. Engaging in group projects, participating in extracurricular activities, and interacting with peers allowed me to hone my communication and collaboration skills. I discovered the importance of teamwork, effective communication, and empathy in achieving common goals. These interpersonal skills are invaluable, not only for succeeding academically but also for building meaningful relationships in various aspects of life. Overall, the reflections on the second quarter of 10th grade highlight the symbiotic relationship between academic and personal development, underscoring the importance of a well-rounded education.

Travel Blog: When in Vigan

  As stress finally reduced in the last day of periodical exams, me and my friend decided to plan the destination of our well-deserved short vacation. We craved a place far from the hustle and bustle of tall buildings and big, smokey vehicles. An infamous place, that way, everyone who sees our posts will immediately know where we were. We searched at endless depths of the web, and after some time, we finally found our dream place—Vigan City. The city is known for giving tourists a glimpse back in time, with horse-drawn carriages, ancestral houses dating back to the Spanish Colonial Era, and cobblestone-filled streets. Not only is it infamous, Vigan is recognized as a Historic UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World. Our excitement skyrocketed as we discovered that our chosen destination, Vigan City, coincided with a festival during our planned vacation. The prospect of experiencing the vibrant festivities added an extra layer of anticipation to our trip. Little did we know that our visit would coincide with a spectacular marching band showdown, where we would witness synchronized performances, unique uniforms, and the lively spirit of the local culture on full display, making our well-deserved vacation even more memorable.

  Our first stop was Plaza Burgos, where the marching band showdown was on full display. All groups were synchronized in their dancing, had unique uniforms, flags, batons, drums, and lyres. Many locals and tourists had also gathered to watch the show. With the lively music echoing in the background, we decided to head to nearby food stalls. The Vigan Empanada, lived up to its reputation – a perfect blend of savory and satisfying. The Okoy, left our taste buds craving for more. As we enjoyed our delicious treats, sharing travel experiences and creating lasting connections in the heart of Plaza Burgos.

  Our next stop was the well-known Calle Crisologo. Walking through Calle Crisologo is like stepping into a living museum, where every cobblestone beneath your feet tells a story of centuries past. 

  The well-preserved Spanish colonial houses, with their antique windows and intricately designed balconies, transport you to a bygone era. The soft clip-clop of horse-drawn Kalesas adds a nostalgic rhythm to the air as you navigate the narrow streets lined with artisan shops and charming cafes. 

  Curious as we were about the name of this street, we decided to head at its very own museum. Crisologo Museum was told to be the residence of the honorable Floro Crisologo, the former governor of Ilocos Sur who was assasinated inside Vigan Cathedral by acclaimed outsiders. The century-old mansion became a door to let both tourists and locals witness the success and struggles of Floro Crisologo. 

  To be honest, it was kind of creepy for me. And although it gave us some interesting glimpses of the politics in the province, I was just not fully comfortable with things like — these were the pants he wore when he was killed and there were pictures of where he was laying bloodied on the floor, this car was where she was ambushed, etc. But it was pretty enlightening and gave us a whole new view about Vigan’s history.

  Embarking on a Kalesa ride through the charming streets of Vigan City was a great experience. The rhythmic clatter of hooves echoed as we hit the cobblestone roads, offering a leisurely pace to appreciate the colonial architecture and vibrant surroundings.

  Our destination, Pagburnayan, a traditional pottery workshop, welcomed us with the warm greetings of the souvenir sellers and the earthy scent of clay. Guided by a skilled potter, we immersed ourselves in the hands-on experience of crafting burnay jars, witnessing the meticulous process of molding and shaping the distinctive pottery that Vigan is renowned for. We also took our time admiring the trinkets the jar factory offered.

   We hopped on the horse-drawn carriage once more to a visit to the Provincial Jail Museum which added a unique and intriguing dimension to our experience. As we entered the museum, we were greeted by fellow tourists, a polite attendant, and humorous guards. 

  The imposing facade of the historic jail building hinted at the stories within its walls. The exhibits unfolded a tapestry of Vigan's history, showcasing artifacts, photographs, and narratives that provided insights into the evolution of the city's justice system. 

  Walking through the well-preserved cells and examining the artifacts offered a somber yet enlightening perspective on the criminal justice system of a bygone era. The artifacts provided tangible connections to the lives and stories of those who once inhabited these confined spaces, leaving me with a deeper understanding of the complexities that characterized the criminal justice system of that era.

  As me and my friends parted ways due to the differences of our next destinations, I decided to go to the heart of where festivities were being held. While strolling through the trade fair, the vibrant array of products caught my eye, ranging from intricately woven textiles to handmade crafts and local delicacies. Their stalls are also decorated in accordance to what they are selling which are eye-pleasing to all. 

  I was fortunate enough to bump into a known figure, Chavit Singson, a Filipino businessman and politician, the former governor of Ilocos Sur. This chance encounter with a prominent local figure made my visit to the heart of the festivities in Vigan even more memorable.

  As I went back, I decided my last stop to be at the crazed One Ilocos Sur Cafe inside the Ilocos Sur Provincial Tourism Development and Promotion Office AKA Farmer’s Building. Entering the bustling cafe, I was greeted by the enticing aroma of freshly brewed local coffee and the lively chatter of fellow visitors. The cafe's eclectic decor, featuring traditional Ilocano elements and modern touches, provided a cozy setting to unwind. 

  As I bid farewell to the captivating city of Vigan, I couldn't help but reflect on the many  experiences that defined my journey. From the enchanting cobblestone streets of Calle Crisologo to the immersive pottery-making at Pagburnayan, Vigan offered a rich tapestry of history, culture, and gastronomy. Exploring the Provincial Jail Museum provided a poignant glimpse into the city's past, while chance encounters with local figures like Chavit Singson added unexpected layers to my adventure. The heartwarming festivities, diverse trade fair offerings, and the delightful flavors of One Ilocos Sur Cafe made my time in Vigan an unforgettable exploration of heritage and hospitality. With memories in tow, I left Vigan with a deep appreciation for its timeless charm and a longing to return someday.

Rizal's greatest contribution lies in his role as a visionary intellectual and revolutionary leader. Born in 1861 during the waning years of Spanish colonial rule, Rizal witnessed the injustices and abuses done  against his fellow countrymen. Armed not with weapons, but with the power of his pen, he undertook the mission to awaken the Filipino spirit and ignite a light for change. His literary masterpieces, most notably "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," served as fuels for social awakening. Through these novels, the hero laid bare the harsh realities of colonial abuse, exposing the corruption and abuses prevalent in Philippine society. His sharp insights into the human condition, intertwined with a vprofound understanding of his people's struggles, resonated deeply and stirred the hearts of Filipinos across class and status.

Beyond mere critique, Rizal's writings proposed reforms and advocated for a peaceful revolution. He envisioned a Philippines free from the shackles of Spanish tyranny, where education, justice, and equality would flourish. Rizal's ideals inspired a generation of nationalists, planting the seeds of resistance that would later bloom into a full-fledged movement for independence. His influence extended beyond the written word. As a scholar, he pursued education in Europe, sharpening his intellectual prowess and acquiring a broader perspective on governance and societal structures. His commitment to education is evident in his famous quote, "Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan”. Rizal recognized the great power of education in shaping minds and fostering a sense of national pride. In addition to his literary and educational contributions, Rizal's advocacy for social and political reforms led to his active involvement in the Propaganda Movement. From his base in Europe, he engaged in diplomatic efforts, seeking support for reforms and bringing the Philippines' predicament to the attention of the global community. His fearless pursuit of justice and equality on the international stage elevated the Philippine cause to a global platform.

To conclude, the man's greatest contribution was not only in sowing the seeds of revolution but also in providing a fusing vision for a free and sovereign Philippines. His ideas overcame regional divides and disparate interests, forging a common identity among Filipinos. Rizal became the face of the Philippines' quest for freedom, encapsulating the aspirations of a nation yearning to break free from the chains of colonial subjugation. Jose Rizal's greatest contribution to Philippine society lies in his transformative impact as an intellectual luminary, a beacon of hope, and a catalyst for change. His legacy endures, inspiring generations to come, as the Philippines continues to strive for progress, justice, and the realization of his ideals that Rizal so passionately championed.

New Year, New Me: The Blueprint For A New Year

  

  Every time a new year starts, the phrase "New Year, New Me" echoes through the air. A declaration that is voiced with either confidence or an empty promise. Many of us embark on this annual ritual of setting ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ promising to fulfill them before the end of the year to make significant changes in our lives. However, these resolutions should be more than a mere slogan for bragging and acknowledgement, it should be seen as a challenge for ourselves that teach us responsibility and self-confidence. The glamour of a new year lies in its symbolic power—a blank canvas awaiting the strokes of our aspirations. It's a time when we reflect on the past, acknowledge our achievements and shortcomings, and envision the possibilities that lie ahead. The idea of a "New Me" taps into our innate desire for self-improvement and the pursuit of a better version of ourselves.

  

  While resolutions are often made with the best intentions, they can sometimes become a source of stress and disappointment. Instead of setting rigid resolutions, perhaps it's more effective to focus on setting intentions. Intentions are flexible, guiding principles that allow for growth and adaptation. They emphasize the journey rather than a specific destination, fostering a mindset of continuous improvement. Personal growth is not a one-time event; it's a continuous process of evolution. Rather than expecting an instantaneous transformation, we should appreciate the small, consistent steps taken towards our goals. 

 

  Change is a gradual unfolding of our potential, and it requires patience, self-compassion, and a willingness to learn from setbacks. In the pursuit of a "New Me," it's crucial to practice self-compassion. Acknowledging that setbacks are an inherent part of the journey allows us to navigate challenges with resilience. Embracing self-compassion enables us to learn from failures, adapt to change, and, ultimately, grow into the person we aspire to be. The road to self-improvement is not a linear path, and perfection is an unattainable goal. Instead of fixating on the destination, we should celebrate the progress made along the way. Every step taken, no matter how small, brings us closer to embodying the "New Me" we envision.

  

  As we embark on this new year, let us embrace the spirit of "New Year, New Me" with a sense of curiosity, resilience, and self-understanding. The journey of personal growth is an active process that unfolds over time. By setting intentions, cultivating self-understanding , and celebrating progress, we can navigate the complexities of change and emerge as a more empowered and authentic version of ourselves. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination, and each day offers an opportunity for renewal and transformation.
